Late night sewing projects

Late night sewing projects, originally uploaded by joomoolynn.

Are becoming more regular…in fact, why am I still up? I am working like mad for a craft show next month and I am having a hard time quieting my mind down enough to sleep, I have so many ideas for things to sell.

If I become more absent over the next few weeks you will know why. I am working my tooshie off. If only that were really something that could happen, to work one’s tooshie off….HA! Night all!

Someone is 2 today

2 years ago today I greeted this little man for the first time.  Oh how sweet he was 🙂  All 8 lbs. 3 oz. of him.  He has brought me so much happiness, words cannot describe how much I love this guy.

Happy Birthday Rowan!  Mommy loves you and I am so so glad that you are mine 🙂

Wee Vintage Wednesday 11/9/2011

Whew!  This week has been a little nuts.  I applied to do my first craft show and just got my application accepted but then realized that I have nothing to sell.  What a noob!  My guess is that I need to have stock on hand if doing shows.  Now I have a month to get down to business and I am freaking out, people.

So, vintage time is a nice break.  I love it when it rolls around 🙂

This little fancy pants is getting so big and chubby and I love it!  She is just over 3 months old now and full of personality.  She is also a total body contact sort of gal.  Like constant.contact.all.the.time.  Can I get a breather?

These little photo shoots tick her right off.  I get many more crying and scowly faces than serene smiley ones….

Her dress is one I found thrift shopping last week.  It’s velvety soft.  I love the buttons and the cut.

hat and booties were found a few months ago and finally fit, yay!

This is the flailing limbs pre-meltdown photo.   The end 🙂

DIY Labels

I wanted to share my new adventure in label making!  I decided to make these because I wanted something hand made looking to place inside of the baby boots I have been making lately.  I needed something thin to go inside and had a hard time finding anything online.  I stumbled across a blog post (I cannot remember who’s) that said that twill ribbon and printable transfer paper made wonderful labels.  I bought the printer paper (had to order special online since I have a laser printer and not an inkjet) and some twill and gave it a go last night.

It took some tweaking, like constantly moving the iron and using the point of it to dig into the paper to get them to transfer really well.  Now I have the rhythm down and I really love how they turned out.  It is such an inexpensive way (I was able to get dozens of labels out of one sheet of paper) to add that finishing touch to your handmade goods.  I used fray check after applying the ink on the ends of the labels to prevent unraveling.

Want to make these too?  Start with a great font (needs to be commercial friendly if you are selling your goods) from somewhere like Dafont.  You will need twill ribbon, mine is 1/2″ and I bought it at Joann fabrics in the ribbon and trim section.  You will also need heat transfer paper that is compatible with your type of printer.  I had to buy online but if you own an inkjet printer chances are that your local craft shop will have some in stock.  When printing make sure to change paper type to transparency or thick paper and remove all other paper from the printer drawer to ensure proper feed.

Cut as closely as you can around the words or picture and then apply using heat appropriate for the fabric you are applying to.  Twill is cotton so I used high heat.  Also be sure to heat set (place a piece of blank paper over the ribbon and apply iron heat for about 20 seconds) after applying the ink if the item being labeled will ever be washed.

Happy Saturday! 🙂

Wee Vintage Wednesday 11/2/2011

Good morning!  Technically…….(12:06 a.m. here in good ole NY).  I am getting this post in because who knows how tomorrow will go.  This week features my little Violet girl.  She is wearing a smock/swing top/dress…….not quite sure what to call it other than adorable, that I found a while back and just found in storage as I was organizing and putting the summer clothes away.

Now, this top is handmade and I am not positive that it is really vintage.  It looks like a vintage cut/style, so I am going with it 🙂  I simply adore the fabric print, it looks like little cherries, but messy cherries……does that even make sense?  Remember, midnight here and my brain has already gone to bed 😉

It is smocked completely by hand (as in not a pre-gathered panel that has then been embroidered).  Gosh I am a sucker for smocking.  I fully intend to learn this skill.  It makes my insides all jello like….love.

There is also smocking on the sleeves at the wrist making it flare out all ruffly over her hands.  Totally adorable.  She is showing off the large fake spider she found while walking back from the bus stop.  Some poor trick or treater must have dropped it last night.

Closeup of the fabric and lovely smocking

It is so flowy and perfect for little girl twirls….she loves to twirl 🙂

We paired it with some skinny jeans and moccasins.  Yum.

It was a perfect and WARM fall day today.  It was lovely.  Happy Wednesday!

Halloween went off without a hitch

and it was a blast 🙂  I love getting the kids costumes all put together every year.  I knew my limits this year having a new baby and all.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to make all the costumes and their accessories and I was ok with that.  Good thing too since Asher changed his mind about 500 times about what he wanted to be…….

We had a cowboy

I made the chaps for his costume using this tutorial.  I found the fringe in the ribbon by the yard section and I think it added the perfect finishing touch 🙂  The vest, hat, holster, shirt and boots were thrifted.

We had a “fancy” witch.

Everything must be fancy with her 🙂  She loves tutus and so I decided to make her costume into a tutu sort of dress.  She also wore a hooded cape (not pictured) that I made.  She wore leggings and a black long sleeved shirt under the dress.

We had a little pumpkin.

His costume is from Old Navy.  He was a big hit.  It is pretty adorable seeing a little boy toddle around in a roly poly pumpkin outfit 🙂  His leggings are some I made from a sweater by cutting off the sleeves and making them into pants.   They are merino wool and nice and warm.

And finally we had a little bunny rabbit.  She was going to be a piggy but after finding the bunny coat thrift shopping the other day I changed my mind as it was really chilly in these parts.  She wore a fuzzy sweater romper underneath the coat and brown fuzzy mittens and boots for little bunny feet 🙂  (I didn’t get a close up of her costume).

Here is the whole crew!

We kept close to home and stayed warm.  We have a ridiculous amount of candy and a mommy with a serious sweet tooth……..yikes!

BOO!

Hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween!

Some Bunny is 3 Months Old Today

My little sweetness 🙂  Gosh I love her and can’t imagine life without her.  The time has flown by and at the same time I can’t remember what it was like not to have her.  Happy 3 month day little bunny.

Ellie is wearing the cutest coat by Bunnies By The Bay that I found thrift shopping.

Accessorize – Baby Felt Bow Headband Tutorial

Whew!  It has been such a fun and full week!  My lovely parents came to visit all the way from Utah and left today, many tears were shed 😦  While they were here I worked with my Mom pumping out tons of goodies for my only sister who is due with her first baby girl this winter.  One thing that is a must in my book is little bows 🙂  Really helps with the “Oh my, what a darling little boy” comments.  It also helps to dress up any outfit!  I love the look and feel of felt for these headbands.  I decided to write up a tutorial on the process!  Enjoy!  **Tutorial is for personal use only.  If blogged about, I would appreciate a shout out and possibly a link back here to the tutorial.  Thanks!

*If you don’t have the resources or time to make your own bows but need to get your hot little hands on a sweet everyday set, I have listed a classic colors set of 6 in my shop.

Supplies:

-felt (wool blend used) *Joann fabrics carries basic colors and Etsy is another great place to find wool blend and pure wool felts

waxed beading thread.  This thread is thick like dental floss (you could use dental floss in a bind).  It is very strong and ideal for making bows and hair accessories.  I found mine at Walmart in the beading aisle. Linked up to Amazon.

printable template PDF (please do not redistribute or copy, my own personal design)

-fabric scissors

-needle

-elastic (double fold used).  Find it here or here.

Step 1.

Cut felt pieces according to template.  Cut elastic.  Typically newborn babies head’s measure approx. 12.5″-13″, so cut elastic at 13.5″.  If making for older baby or child, measure their head first.  Add 1″ to the measurement to account for overlap.  Now is a good time to thread your needle.  Cut a long piece of beading thread and double it up knotting the ends together.

Step 2.

Fold 5″ piece of felt overlapping ends by about 1/2″ on each end as pictured.

Step 3.

Place folded felt piece on top of 3″ felt piece, centering it.  Set aside.

Step 4.

Making sure elastic isn’t twisted, overlap ends about 1/2″ on each end and hold in place.

Step 5.

Place felt pieces directly over the folded portion of the elastic, center the elastic in back of felt.  Hold with one hand in place.

Step 6.

With the knot starting on the top edge of the bow, make a running stitch (large stitch) and end with the thread on the upper side.

Step 7.

Pulling on thread, bunch up felt so that it creases along stitches.  Hold tight and begin wrapping thread around bow center tightly about 5-6 times (7a).  Turn over bow to back and run needle underneath wrapped thread.  This will create a loop with thread.  Send needle through the loop 3 times.  Pull needle slowly and create a tight knot at the base of bow. (7b)

Step 8.

Place a dab of glue (hot glue used) in front center of bow.  Adhere 1/2″ piece of felt to the glue, centered.

Step 9.

Glue down each end of the 1/2″ piece of felt around the back of the bow.  Trim ends if necessary if they are too long.

Step 10.

Trim the bottom 1″ layer of felt ends into v-shapes.  Try to keep them further out than the bow for the best look.

Step 11.

Use fray check on elastic ends to keep them from fraying or unraveling.  You are done!  YAY!

Now that’s a cute baby head! 🙂

I would love to see bows you make!  Come and enter them into the Flickr group!

P.S. The boots my baby are modeling are made using my Ruffled Boots Pattern available in my shop!

Wee Vintage Wednesday 10/26/2011

It is really fall now in upstate NY, leaves are changing and falling and the air is crisp and cold.  Fall is my absolute favorite season of the year.  I love everything about it……..the sights, the smells, the desire to bundle up and sip warm beverages…..sigh 🙂  Rowan is really fascinated with the change of the leaves this year and we have been heading out doors to play in them whenever the weather and his little sister allows 😉

Here he is soaking up the outdoors.  He is wearing a darling vintage sweater I found thrift shopping a few months ago.  I think I literally squealed when I saw it and then again when I could tell it was his size 🙂  It is marked size 3 but fits him perfectly at 2. It reminds me of scandinavian design, which I totally adore.

He is awfully dapper………

and silly……..

and playful.

I had some fantastic shoes luck a few weeks ago.  I had been dreaming of finding some saddle shoes for him.  I had some when I was little and I loved them. Lookie what I found!  For under $5 I might add!

So, fall=love in these parts…..how about you?  Are you enjoying fall?

Happy Wednesday!

To my dearest sister…..

Mom and I are very busy making lovely things for your little bundle while she is here visiting  🙂  I can’t wait until she comes!  You will be such a fabulous Mommy.  I love you and miss you.  I am so excited that we get to share Mommyhood together.

Love,

Your sister Jaime

p.s. blog readers, I have a pattern in the works for the bib and I am planning to list the bib/shoe pattern bundle in my shop very soon 🙂
