* I just started a flickr group for any projects made using my tutorials. Please feel free to stop by and post your finished or WIP! 
*Bibs made using this pattern may be used for personal use only. It has come to my attention that my pattern has been stolen and was being used along with my tutorial and pictures for a for profit class at a sewing shop. Not cool. If you want the PDF for the pattern, email me. 
1. Supplies
- Fabric (fat quarters are plenty for this project. You can use as many or little fabrics as you want!
- UPDATED 9/2012 pattern. Click bib1 and bib2 to get the PDF files. It comes in in 2 pieces. Be sure to select fill page instead shrink to fit when you print or you may end up with a wee bib 😉 When printed it should measure between approx. 6 1/8th” and 6 1/4th” on the fold and 11 3/4″ from tip to bottom.
- Batting. I used Warm And Natural cotton batting.
- Velcro or snaps. I prefer velcro, it is safer and makes the bib fit longer as you can adjust as the baby gets bigger.
- Scissors that can cut through multiple layers of fabric
- Straight pins
- Marker or pencil for tracing pattern onto fabric. I use a Mark B Gone pen.
- Rotary mat and cutter (optional)
- Chopstick or other tool to smooth curves once bib is turned.
2. Cut out your fabrics. I typically cut the top and bottom pieces around 7″x13″ and the middle piece 3.5″x13″ . That is not a strict rule though! This is where you can get creative. You can have as many strips in whatever width you want. Often times I will feature a cute fussy cut of fabric right smack dab in the middle of the middle row. You decide! See the bottom of this post for more ideas on piecing!
*If you wanted to make some for meal time, most craft stores sell this fabulous stuff called iron on vinyl! Iron it onto your pieces before you piece them together! You won’t need batting for meal bibs.
3. Sew strips together. Use a seam allowance of 1/4″
4. Press seams to either side.
5. Iron in half, right sides together.
6. Place pattern right next to fold in fabric. Using your transfer pen, trace around the pattern. Make the middle section LOWER than the neck opening. It becomes too bulky with the seam if you make it any higher, 1/2″-1″ away is a good amount. DO NOT CUT OUT!!
7. Flip pattern over, match up edges of pattern with lines you have traced and continue tracing bib.
8. Cut your backing and batting the same-ish size as your top.
9. Lay your batting down first. Then lay the WRONG side of your backing fabric facing down towards the batting with the RIGHT side facing up.
10. Lay your top RIGHT side facing DOWN and WRONG side facing up on top of the backing fabric. The RIGHT sides of the top and backing fabric should be facing each other.
11. Pic in several place on the inside of the drawn line. Make sure your fabric is smooth, flat and wrinkle free. Also, make sure the pins go through all layers.
12. Begin sewing right on the line. Leave a 4-6 space along the side where it is straightest so you can turn the bib right side out. Make sure and back tack your stitches at beginning and end or else when you turn it will pull apart and turn into a mess!
13. Using your scissors, cut 1/4″ outside of seam all the way around EXCEPT where you left the open space. DON’T trim there, you want all that fabric so you aren’t left with any raw edges when you are done.
14. Cut notches around all the curves. This is a pain in the you-know-what. Keep going strong! 😀 Pinking shears also work great if you have them! Don’t get too close to the seam or you can either clip the stitches, go beyond the stitches or later have fraying that goes beyond the stitches. All of the above are very, very bad.
15. Flip that sucker right side out! Use your chopstick or turning tool to smooth all the curves out to make it lay nice and flat. Iron the flap to the opening under. I trim the BATTING ONLY flush with the outer edge of the bib. Leaving it just creates unnecessary bulk. Pin the opening shut.
16. Starting within the middle section sew or quilt a straight line across. Any allowance really is fine, it is personal preference. Continue with each section moving outward.
17. After the sections have been quilted, sew around the perimeter of the bib catching the opening. Make your allowance small, around 1/8th” to be sure to catch both of those flaps.
18. Attach velcro. One side will go on the top of the bib and the other will go on the back. Be sure to check your placement before sewing to ensure that they match up when bib is connected.
19. Mission complete! You just made a wicked cute bib! Pat yourself on the back, and make another! 😀

Such a great tutorial! Couple of questions while I wait for my husband to fix our printer–
I think our sons are probably about the same size (Cooper is a BIG 3.5 months old). Does this size of bib work for older ages? I’ve loved the pattern from Chickpea Sewing Studio but Coop’s almost outgrowing it.
Also, do you think using pinking shears around the edges instead of notching it out would work? I only ask because I’m oh so lazy.

quickie question since i’m a “quilting” noob. if i don’t plan on adding an extra band of fabric like you did, do I still need to “quilt” lines through the top fabric, batting, and bottom fabric to help the batting stay put, or will it be sufficient to just sew around the perimeter of the bib after turning it right side out?
So, are you just doing one piece on top and one on bottom then? no patchwork on the top? If so, then going around the perimeter is sufficient. It does help it stay put the more lines you sew the more stabilized it will be. Hope that answers your question! Let me know if you have any more 🙂
yes i plan to do a one piece top and one piece bottom. no extra patchworky stuff on the top. it does make sense that the batting will be more stabilized if i put in some extra rows of stitching. we’ll see how things go…. thanks for answering my question!

I adore this bib. Could I trouble you with a measurement? I’m just curious to see if the pattern printed out correctly. It looks really little to me, but it could be because I’ve been out of the baby business a few years and can’t remember how big a bib should be. 🙂
Could you tell me the approx. measurement of the line on your pattern where it says “cut on fold”? Or approx. how long the whole bib is from top to bottom.

Absolutely! The line where the fold is measures between approx. 6 1/8th” and 6 1/4th”. The total length of the pattern from tip to bottom is approx 11 3/4th” Hope that helps! I will post this information to the original post! Please let me know if you have any questions. 🙂
When you print make sure to print 100% or fill page instead of shrink to fit.

You say for personal use for this pattern. We have a home here where I live that has adopted several children with special neads and also takes care of foster children in the same situation and our Quilting Group would like to make some of the bibs for their use. We visited her home today and she is a remarkable person. She showed us some of the bibs they have and they are very, very worn. Please let me know your thoughts.

This size is perfect for the 7 mth old grandson but might be small for the 3 yr old Granddaughter. Where would you enlarge this pattern to make it wider and longer? Does the piece that holds the Velcro need to be enlarged also? I know this might sound like I should be able to figure this out but…well, not so much.

Such a cute bib pattern…thanks! I do have one question about the size. I printed the pattern and did the fit to page direction. The length of the bib comes out correctly but the width only comes out to 4 1/2 inches which doubled would be a 9 inch bib…is this correct…

Love this pattern! It’s been on my to do list forever and now that my baby girl is in daycare, we need more bibs. I downloaded the files successfully but like another commenter, I’m having trouble getting them to print correctly. They print about 4.25 inches across instead of 6.25″ mentioned above. Any tips? Only print options I have are fit to printable area or shrink to printable area. Thanks!
you are not able to disable those? If not, I am not sure what to have you do. Maybe you could tape the pattern together and kind of enlarge it to the proper size using a copier? Hope you find something that works!

I’m new to sewing but I think I can do this. I will be making this for a girl at work who just found out she is pregnant. Can you think of any reason why I couldn’t make this a reversible bib, with one side for a boy and one side for a girl?

THANKS SO MUCH!! The bibs are sweet and the instructions so clear and easy to follow. I bought a ton of fabric and can’t wait to whip up a bundle for our 1st granddaughter who is expected in September. One question…. is there a reason that the bottom is cut the same amount of fabric as the top section. It seems like it is wasting a few inches? Am I missing something?
I just do it that way to make sure I completely center it and for beginner sewers. You can alter it to waste less fabric which is what I do when I make them regularly.

Ive been wanting a pattern like this to make bibs for grandkids. I will also make it bigger for toddlers. The bibs ive made before, i used cotton terry or an older towel for the back, and no batting and used it to wash their face after they eat. Great pattern and LOVE the fabrics.

I love this pattern, as well as the burp cloth tutorial, I can’t wait to make both!! Quick question, what type of material do you recommend for the bibs? I make flannel rags quilts and have tons of extra fabric … Just wondering if flannel would be okay for this? If so, I can make matching bibs and burp cloths for my sister who is expecting!! I loooove making baby clothes, especially bibs. This one is my favorite shape. Yours are very cute and I’m in the mood to sew for baby again!
One thing I do is line my bibs with soft terry cloth. It’s absorbent and wipes up the little face afterward, too!

quick question. I have set all the settings possible on my printer and no matter the settings mine printes 4 3/8″ x 11 3/4″ ..you notes say it should be 6 1/4″ wide.. when I “add 2” to the interior the neck opening appears really large. Any suggestions?

I am also wanting to use flannel to make the bibs? Any issues with that?
THere shouldn’t be! Just be aware that you make need to pin more and sew more slowly any time you combine different types of fabrics together. Good luck~!

I love the ease of this pattern.. I was wondering if you have a pattern for a 2 different bibs my oldest daughter recieved as a gift (30 years ago)…One was a pullover with ( looked like ) a sweatshirt collar and the other one had a drawstring collar with angel wing sleeves( this one fit her until she was 2years old ) . I had kept them both…but either misplaced or lost them when we moved…
we live in guatemala and work with many missions teams here–these are so easy to make —we can give one to each baby we see or pregnant mom–little cost as we can buy used jeans at our paca store–the local second hand clothing stores and a large pair of jeans there would only cost us about $1 that would make so many bibs – a good opportunity to use up all my lace and fabric scraps as well-thanks so much for this great gift idea

Hi Jaime! I just have a few questions for you. Maybe the answers are obvious, but I taught myself to sew so I don’t necessarily know all these techniques and tactics.
I was wanting to know why you ridged the edges before turning the bib right-side-out. Do that help with bulk?
I was also wondering how you get your stitch to be so smooth in the curve. I usually try to avoid rounded designs because I always mess up the stitching. Please help!

Yes, it takes out bulk and helps it lay flat. I go slowly around the curves adjusting as I go.

I absolutely LOVE this bib tutorial!!! I have since made 10 of these bibs for my messy 2yr old and have the fabric cut out to make 18 more for friends & gifts! They are the PERFECT size and just way to easy! I’ve actually used a nice cotton flannel for both the front and back and skipped the batting (I’m a pretty novice sewer) and they are EXCELLENT! I’ve used Pinking Shears to do the notching around the outside and it worked perfectly! I cannot tell you just how impressed I am with these!!!
I’ve also stumbled across the idea of, if in a pinch just grab a package of four flannel receiving blankets hack them up and turn them into perfectly co-ordinating bibs!!!

Hi there! I love this and am going to do it for a baby gift. I want to do it with the iron on vinyl, but was wondering, if I do should I just iron it on after tracing the pattern and use it the same as the rest of this tutorial (minus the batting) or is there something different i should do (dont iron it on til after sewing everything, etc)?

I would read the directions on the package but my guess and suggestion is to iron on all pieces before sewing them together.
My kids are 5, 7, & 11 but I feel like having another baby just so I can make some of these cute bibs! Guess I’ll just pressure some of my friends to have kids so I can sew for them! Great Job!

Yes you can! Also you can try without the batting and see how you like it.
Love this pattern! I’m making some for my granddaughter and for a fundraiser. I too have questions on the total width. When I look at your completed project on your cutting mat it looks as it measures 9 inches across as my completed bib does but you state that the width of the pattern from the fold is 6 1/4 inches. Thanks for the great inspiration to sew again.
That is meant to be the length I think. It’s not 6″ from the fold in width. Yours sounds about right.

I just found this post via Pinterest. I made a bib last night and it looks awesome! I just used an old terry towelling cloth nappy for the back (and no batting). I did most of it before bed and was so excited about how good it looked I couldn’t sleep and finished it at 4am!

I stumbled across this pattern on Pinterest, I plan on making a few for my new grand-daughter. I see now that laminated cotton is available, I might give that a try for the outward facing pieces. I remember when my kids were toddlers, sometimes in a pinch they would get to wear a trash bag at Grandma’s because she was so freaked out they might get something on the floor and make a mess…lol I am so beyond worrying about just trivial stuff. Thanks for being so kind as to share, how generous of you!

1ST time grandma to be, this is great.
Great tutorial! I just made my first ever “quilted” thing with this bib. It came out beautifully. The instructions and pics are very helpful. I did make a couple of variations. I installed two snap fixtures rather than Velcro and used a different bib shape (I was unable to download the file). How do I post a pic?

Thanks for the great tutorial. I love the pictures! I’m a knitter, but my mother was a wonderful seamstress. I have been dabbling in sewing just a bit. And I just wanted to point out a little typo… Here’s what it says “11. Pic in several place on the inside of the drawn line. Make sure your fabric is smooth, flat and wrinkle free. Also, make sure the pins go through all layers.” It makes sense that the first word should be pin and not pic. Other than that the tutorial is a wonderful step by step of how to make the bibs! Thanks again! Can’t wait to have a little one so I can make really cute bibs of my own!

I am new at sewing and the lingo is confusing. LOL.
I am going to sound like an idiot BUT. when you said sew around the perimeter of the bib and make sure to catch both flaps, haven’t I already sewn all the pieces (bib) together?
I should just be sewing where I turned the bib right side out at the opening?

Yes! You want to start at the opening and now top stitch around the whole bib.
