For the love of polka dots – a crib mobile tutorial

*For those of you who want to make a mobile yourself but don’t have the time or resources to gather all of the supplies, I now offer a DIY kit through my etsy shop.  The kit includes almost everything to make your own mobile!  You just need to supply the paint and your ironing and sewing (optional) skills.

* I just started a flickr group for any projects made using my tutorials.  Please feel free to stop by and post your finished or WIP! 🙂

Hi there!  It has been a while.  I have been feverishly working on this project and it is finally done!  I took pictures along the way and wrote up a tutorial to go along with it if anyone is interested.  I simply adore this mobile, so glad that I took the plunge, much cuter than anything I saw in the stores.

*Wanted to note that I used two sided woven ribbon.  That way it looks good from both sides.  I get all my ribbon from Ribbons And Bows Oh My.  They have great prices and fast shipping.

Find the beading tutorial to use beads on your mobile HERE.

**Sewing down the center of the circles is optional.  The glue should hold very well, I just do it for my peace of mind :)**

This is when you would the hoop and beads need to be completed and dry.  Here is a tip for painting:

*The easiest way I have found to paint the hoop and beads is to use spray paint.  To paint the beads I get the floral syrofoam (green stuff) and bamboo skewers. Cut skewers to around 4 inches long.  Make sure that beads stay suspended on the skewers and don’t fall all the way to the bottom.  If they do, wrap a layer on masking tape in the middle of the skewer to keep them suspended.

Paint top portion of beads and then when dry, flip the beads over on the skewers and paint the other side.  This can also be hand done with acrylic paints.

*I use 6 circles for 4 ribbons and 7 circles on the other 4.  This way they stagger a bit and look really nice.

That’s it!  Let me know if you have any questions 🙂  If you make one, link me up, I would love to see.  Oh, this tutorial is for personal use only.  Thanks!

It’s so cute! I just bought a handmade dinosaur mobile for my son-to-be, but if I hadn’t, I probably would have done this with leftover fabric from his nursery decor.

I like this and I remember seeing it awhile ago. You have great tutorials, by the way!

Where did you get your red beads or did you paint them yourself?

  12. 16 Susan May 28, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Love the mobile! Can I ask too where you got the big red letter on the wall?? It is fabulous too and looks so good with the mobile.

  13. 18 Perrine July 25, 2010 at 9:49 pm

What a beautiful decoration for the nursery. Whats more, when they grow up, the kids will see how much effort we put into their room and love us more. Ideally!

  21. 30 Andrea August 14, 2010 at 3:57 am

Oh how I love this mobile (and room- what I can see of it at least!) I am loving your bumper too, did you make that as well or purchase it? If you made it, what is the line of fabric, I would love to find something like that! Thanks for the inspiration, I have been in a creative rut and don’t have much time left- this is just what I needed! Thanks!

    • 31 sewshesews August 14, 2010 at 6:25 am

Thank you! The bumper was purchased. The only fabric line I can think of that is similar is Disco Dots. It is out of print but can be found online. Good luck! 🙂

    so cute

  23. 33 Gaye September 2, 2010 at 8:05 pm

I love your mobile! Great tutorial to go with it. I also love the red R, where did you get it?

  24. 35 Jennifer September 20, 2010 at 9:19 pm

This is just adorable! I don’t have any babies anymore, but this would be perfect to adapt for my 12 yo … she wants those hanging beads in the doorway of her room (like the ’60’s), but they’re hard to find and never just the right style. But this would be just right! And, bonus, it’d be a lot less noisy to walk (or run, in her case) through LOL! Thanks!

  25. 36 koko morsi September 21, 2010 at 3:02 pm

this is so cute and lovely thank you very much good luck

  26. 37 Linda Wills September 21, 2010 at 4:20 pm

That would even be a good idea for a set of small curtains too. I have so many small pieces of material thanks for the great pattern.

I just love your blog! This mobile is very cool!

  28. 39 Andrea October 27, 2010 at 12:04 am

I LOVE this and want to make one for my baby boy on the way! It’s the best mobile I’ve seen!! It is so much better than any of the store bought ones.

Questions: What size are your circles and what size is the ribbon?

    • 40 sewshesews October 27, 2010 at 2:59 am

Thank you! 🙂 The size of the circles are about 1 3/4″ in diameter and the ribbon is 3/8″. I used the lid from a sports bottle to trace the circles. Let me know if you have any more questions 🙂

  29. 41 Estela @ Weekly Bite November 27, 2010 at 4:38 am

I LOVE this!!! Will be adding any more kits to your etsy shop? I went to order one and they were sold out 🙂

  30. 42 Serenity December 31, 2010 at 5:29 pm

Hi! How long are the ribbons you used? This is really cute and I’m going to make one to distract my wee one 🙂

    • 43 sewshesews December 31, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Hi! 🙂 I cut my ribbons (4) at 25″ and (4) at 28″ . I put 6 circles per 25″ ribbon and 7 circles per 28″ ribbon. I space the circles about 1 1/2″ apart. I stagger the ribbons when I glue them onto the hoop alternating the lengths so that it looks really nice. Hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any more questions.

  33. 46 Nicole February 9, 2011 at 1:20 am

I’m thinking I could elimate some steps and use scrapbook paper sewn to ribbon instead of fabric. I could elimate the beads at the top and use ribbon…..but I really like the beads and don’t want to make that sacrifice. What are your thoughts about using scrapbook paper?

    • 47 sewshesews February 9, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Sure you could use paper! You wouldn’t have to sew it, you don’t have to sew the fabric either, it is optional. The heat n bond has a really strong glue, it holds up very well. I just sewed for peace of mind.

      • 48 Andrea Neal September 9, 2011 at 3:58 pm

I was looking for this same idea… I am thinking of using scrapbook paper with my cricut instead, but wasn’t sure if it NEEDED to be sewn or not?? I wouldn’t need to do the heat n bond if I used scrap paper, would I?? Just glue it well to the ribbon?? Thank you so much. I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE this tutorial! I hope it turns out half as nice as yours!

      • 49 sewshesews September 9, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Hi! 🙂 If you used scrapbook paper, you could just use double sided tape or those photo sticker and it would work perfectly, no need to sew at all, you don’t have to sew them if you use fabric either, the heat n bond holds it really well.

Please link up when you make it! I would love to see.

      • 50 Andrea Neal September 9, 2011 at 6:06 pm

YAY! Thank you!! I surely will!!! Hoping to get to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby ASAP to find all my supplies!!!!!

  34. 51 Nicole February 9, 2011 at 1:48 am

just did a little research online. Cricut will cut fabric….now to just borrow a cricut!

    wauw, looks so summerlike!

  36. 53 Adriennesmama April 20, 2011 at 2:01 am

Hey, I just found this link, my little one is due next month. I wanted something a little more personal and stumbled upon this! I went and got everything I needed, and i’m starting it now. But I have a question, I want to do the fabric, but I want to add pictures too. How would you do that so baby could look at them?

    • 54 sewshesews April 20, 2011 at 2:20 am

You could just trace the circle pattern onto the photos and add adhesive strips or sew down the middle of them and mix them in with the fabric circles. The baby might not be able to see the pictures head on, but will be able to see them at an angle.

  37. 55 Teagan July 17, 2011 at 2:50 am

A friend of my made this mobile and it was so cute. She had it ready for a baby shower, then had each guest write on each circle. We wrote a wish, a dream or a hope that we had for the girls. It was a great idea and I can’t wait to make this for my sister…

  38. 57 CALLIE BRANSON July 28, 2011 at 3:34 am

HI, I AM ATTEMPTING TO REPLICATE YOUR WONDERFUL MOBILE, BUT I DO HAVE A QUESTION…HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU GET ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY CUT CIRCLES? THEY MATCH UP PERFECTLY IN YOUR PICTURES. NO MATTER HOW SLOW AND CAREFUL I TRY TO CUT THE CIRCLES OUT, THEY DO NOT FIT TOGETHER PERFECTLY. I’M GUESSING THIS IS ONE OF THOSE ‘PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT’ TYPE OF THINGS. 🙂 THANK YOU.

    • 58 sewshesews July 28, 2011 at 11:23 am

Oh mine are for sure not perfect! I have some wonderful scissors that really help. They are the Gingher craft scissors. They are made to cut through leather and are pretty small. For some reason they cut circles wonderfully.

Another reader had a fabulous tip, she said that once the iron on adhesive is on the fabric and the paper is still intact, you can actually use circle hole punches! Worth a shot 🙂

      Hope that helps.

  39. 59 nicole July 28, 2011 at 11:51 am

I borrowed a friend’s cricut to cut my fabric circles.

  40. 61 Lindsay August 24, 2011 at 8:41 pm

My 8 mo old LOVES windchimes and I wanted to get something like that to hang in her room, but I wasn’t wild about the noises. I must make one of these!!! Thank you so much for posting the steps!

  41. 62 Lynde September 9, 2011 at 3:34 pm

I made one for the little girl I have due in January! Here is the link http://ninnyscraftycraziness.blogspot.com/2011/09/baby-mobile.html

Hi! I saw your mobile on pinterest and fell in love! But I am also in love with the bumper in the pic, can you tell me where it is from. I know this post is from last year but I was hoping maybe to find it out there someone 🙂 Thanks!

  43. 64 Amy November 16, 2011 at 5:03 pm

The mobile is beautiful! Can you tell me what size circles and what size embroidery hoop you used?
    Thanks!

  44. 66 Ashlee January 2, 2012 at 6:14 am

Thank you so much for this beautiful tutorial! I loved seeing everyone’s different take on it and I absolutely love how mine turned out, despite my being a terrible diy’er and having to make a few changes or lose my mind.

That is so amazing! Thanks for the inspiration!

  46. 68 Kelly January 7, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Mine is almost finished! How long did your ribbon end up being, and how far did you hang it above the crib?

    • 69 sewshesews January 7, 2012 at 10:57 pm

wonderful! I cut my ribbons at 25 and 28 inches and I added more beads to mine so that it would hang down lower. You could adjust it to fit your room 🙂

  47. 71 kim January 19, 2012 at 7:21 am

I was wondering if you had made a quilt to go with this mobile, and if so if you had posted a photo of it. I would love to see it as I love the colors and would like to make one similar. Thanks.

  48. 73 Jill Vandermeulen March 5, 2012 at 2:47 am

Love your mobile! And I am going to make it. What size hoop did you use?
And what size wooden beads? They look big in the picture but in the tutorial, next to your fingers, they look small.

My daughter-in-law posted your mobile as something she likes on Pinterest as she is expecting our first grandchild, so I am going to surprise her with this!

    Thank you,
    Jill

How big is the letter “R” from Joanns? It is so cute!!

  50. 77 Lani Wills May 26, 2012 at 3:59 am

Ive just finished making this mobile in shades of white and grey/silver for my nursery! Looks beautiful in the room! Love it! Thanks heaps.

  51. 79 Lyndean Gilligan May 28, 2012 at 5:52 pm

I made one for my son. Used ribbon to cover the hoop and plastic beads instead of wood. Made some other changes as well. It was so much fun. Thanks for the great idea!

Hopefully you can see it using the link above. Facebook privacy settings and all…

  52. 84 Casey May 30, 2012 at 3:46 am

Would you be willing to make two mobiles for my twins? I just do not have the time to make them. I can send you pics of their nursery. Thanks Casey

  53. 86 Reba June 14, 2012 at 10:52 pm

Making one now in yellows, grays, aquas and black. Also, I just had a wreath so I am using that instead of the embroidery hoop. Once it’s finished I will show it off.

  54. 87 Reba June 15, 2012 at 2:25 pm

I have a question, I have looked for a measurement on the length of each ribbon, did I miss it? How long are your ribbons?

  55. 89 Laura March 30, 2013 at 3:54 am

I made a jungle themed mobile for my grandson. I used pictures of animals, and for ribbon I used green binding in a zigzag to make vines. I found some ruffles binding in the same material and trimmed out the hoop in it.

  56. 91 April April 27, 2013 at 7:54 pm

How far apart are your circles from each other on the ribbon? I’m am making one for a friend- it’s such a cute and unique mobile- thanks for posting!
