*For those of you who want to make a mobile yourself but don’t have the time or resources to gather all of the supplies, I now offer a DIY kit through my etsy shop. The kit includes almost everything to make your own mobile! You just need to supply the paint and your ironing and sewing (optional) skills.
* I just started a flickr group for any projects made using my tutorials. Please feel free to stop by and post your finished or WIP! 🙂
Hi there! It has been a while. I have been feverishly working on this project and it is finally done! I took pictures along the way and wrote up a tutorial to go along with it if anyone is interested. I simply adore this mobile, so glad that I took the plunge, much cuter than anything I saw in the stores.
*Wanted to note that I used two sided woven ribbon. That way it looks good from both sides. I get all my ribbon from Ribbons And Bows Oh My. They have great prices and fast shipping.
Find the beading tutorial to use beads on your mobile HERE.
**Sewing down the center of the circles is optional. The glue should hold very well, I just do it for my peace of mind :)**
This is when you would the hoop and beads need to be completed and dry. Here is a tip for painting:
*The easiest way I have found to paint the hoop and beads is to use spray paint. To paint the beads I get the floral syrofoam (green stuff) and bamboo skewers. Cut skewers to around 4 inches long. Make sure that beads stay suspended on the skewers and don’t fall all the way to the bottom. If they do, wrap a layer on masking tape in the middle of the skewer to keep them suspended.
Paint top portion of beads and then when dry, flip the beads over on the skewers and paint the other side. This can also be hand done with acrylic paints.
*I use 6 circles for 4 ribbons and 7 circles on the other 4. This way they stagger a bit and look really nice.
That’s it! Let me know if you have any questions 🙂 If you make one, link me up, I would love to see. Oh, this tutorial is for personal use only. Thanks!
That is the BEST mobile! I love love love it! I want to make one to hang over my son’s changing table. Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
Jaime, I love it!! That is simply adorable. Forget the kids, I want one to hang over my own bed!
It’s so cute! I just bought a handmade dinosaur mobile for my son-to-be, but if I hadn’t, I probably would have done this with leftover fabric from his nursery decor.
okay, that is seriously the cutest thing I have EVER seen! I want one! 🙂
this is fantastical!!
I just discovered your site, thanks to my mom who found a link to it on my cousin’s website, and I am in LOVE! Everything on here is DARLING!! Thanks for sharing. I am going right over to my own sewing blog, http://modestbarbie.blogspot.com and I am going to put a link to your site!
Thank you so much! 🙂
This is so gorgeous – don’t have any more babies but this would be fun in the girls’ room just hanging from the ceiling!
Oh, most definitely! 🙂
this is a great tutorial with at gorgeous result! thank you! before finding your blog I made something similar, but in Easter style, for a magazine that is out this week (the tutorial will be up on my blog after the mag is out).
all the best to you and happy crafting!
S from Finland
Thank you! I would love to see what you made for the magazine! 🙂
Hi,
This is a beautiful mobile and so simple to make. I would like to share it with my subscribers through my newsletter. I will of course link back to you.
I hope that is ok with you.
Thanks
OK – got it! This is just sooooo perfect 🙂
Yay!
Thank you,
~Jacci
I like this and I remember seeing it awhile ago. You have great tutorials, by the way!
Where did you get your red beads or did you paint them yourself?
thanks! I bought the beads unfinished at joanns and then painted them.
Love the mobile! Can I ask too where you got the big red letter on the wall?? It is fabulous too and looks so good with the mobile.
I got it at Joann’s as well 🙂
This is very cool! What a great idea and easy enough for sewing newbies like me to complete. I don’t have any kids yet but when I do I surely will make them one of these!!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful idea.
I love this! It’s absolutely adorable!!!
This is just the best mobile I have ever seen. So clever, bright, and cheery. I can’t wait for someone to have a baby, so I can make them one. I found you from U Create.
My best- Diane
Thank you! I am so glad that you like it. I would love to see when you make one! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.
Just stumbled upon your blog. This is really cool and I really like your blog banner.
Thank you! 🙂
Wow, what a nice mobile! I will definitely bookmark this for some “future” need. I have a feeling I’m going to be spending a lot of time on your blog…
Very cute!
Here is my mobile – http://dustinloganjaimie.blogspot.com/2010/07/hollys-new-colorful-mobile.html 🙂 thanks for sharing your tutorial!!
Awesome! Going to check it out now 🙂
That is the cutest thing ever!! My daughter is making one for our second grandbaby boy!!! Thanks for the wonderful idea!!!
What a beautiful decoration for the nursery. Whats more, when they grow up, the kids will see how much effort we put into their room and love us more. Ideally!
Oh how I love this mobile (and room- what I can see of it at least!) I am loving your bumper too, did you make that as well or purchase it? If you made it, what is the line of fabric, I would love to find something like that! Thanks for the inspiration, I have been in a creative rut and don’t have much time left- this is just what I needed! Thanks!
Thank you! The bumper was purchased. The only fabric line I can think of that is similar is Disco Dots. It is out of print but can be found online. Good luck! 🙂
so cute
I love your mobile! Great tutorial to go with it. I also love the red R, where did you get it?
thank you! The R is a paper mache one from Joann Fabrics. I painted it with spray paint 🙂
This is just adorable! I don’t have any babies anymore, but this would be perfect to adapt for my 12 yo … she wants those hanging beads in the doorway of her room (like the ’60’s), but they’re hard to find and never just the right style. But this would be just right! And, bonus, it’d be a lot less noisy to walk (or run, in her case) through LOL! Thanks!
this is so cute and lovely thank you very much good luck
That would even be a good idea for a set of small curtains too. I have so many small pieces of material thanks for the great pattern.
I just love your blog! This mobile is very cool!
I LOVE this and want to make one for my baby boy on the way! It’s the best mobile I’ve seen!! It is so much better than any of the store bought ones.
Questions: What size are your circles and what size is the ribbon?
Thank you! 🙂 The size of the circles are about 1 3/4″ in diameter and the ribbon is 3/8″. I used the lid from a sports bottle to trace the circles. Let me know if you have any more questions 🙂
I LOVE this!!! Will be adding any more kits to your etsy shop? I went to order one and they were sold out 🙂
Hi! How long are the ribbons you used? This is really cute and I’m going to make one to distract my wee one 🙂
Hi! 🙂 I cut my ribbons (4) at 25″ and (4) at 28″ . I put 6 circles per 25″ ribbon and 7 circles per 28″ ribbon. I space the circles about 1 1/2″ apart. I stagger the ribbons when I glue them onto the hoop alternating the lengths so that it looks really nice. Hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Thank you-I love this!! Can’t wait to make one! I posted about it here:
http://makealong.blogspot.com/2011/01/polka-dot-mobile.html
This is the cutest thing! Thank you so much for posting the tutorial. I’m going to make one for my next niece or nephew. 🙂
I’m thinking I could elimate some steps and use scrapbook paper sewn to ribbon instead of fabric. I could elimate the beads at the top and use ribbon…..but I really like the beads and don’t want to make that sacrifice. What are your thoughts about using scrapbook paper?
Sure you could use paper! You wouldn’t have to sew it, you don’t have to sew the fabric either, it is optional. The heat n bond has a really strong glue, it holds up very well. I just sewed for peace of mind.
I was looking for this same idea… I am thinking of using scrapbook paper with my cricut instead, but wasn’t sure if it NEEDED to be sewn or not?? I wouldn’t need to do the heat n bond if I used scrap paper, would I?? Just glue it well to the ribbon?? Thank you so much. I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE this tutorial! I hope it turns out half as nice as yours!
Hi! 🙂 If you used scrapbook paper, you could just use double sided tape or those photo sticker and it would work perfectly, no need to sew at all, you don’t have to sew them if you use fabric either, the heat n bond holds it really well.
Please link up when you make it! I would love to see.
YAY! Thank you!! I surely will!!! Hoping to get to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby ASAP to find all my supplies!!!!!
just did a little research online. Cricut will cut fabric….now to just borrow a cricut!
wauw, looks so summerlike!
Hey, I just found this link, my little one is due next month. I wanted something a little more personal and stumbled upon this! I went and got everything I needed, and i’m starting it now. But I have a question, I want to do the fabric, but I want to add pictures too. How would you do that so baby could look at them?
You could just trace the circle pattern onto the photos and add adhesive strips or sew down the middle of them and mix them in with the fabric circles. The baby might not be able to see the pictures head on, but will be able to see them at an angle.
A friend of my made this mobile and it was so cute. She had it ready for a baby shower, then had each guest write on each circle. We wrote a wish, a dream or a hope that we had for the girls. It was a great idea and I can’t wait to make this for my sister…
I remember her! I thought it was such a sweet idea 🙂 When you make yours, please share! I would love to see.
HI, I AM ATTEMPTING TO REPLICATE YOUR WONDERFUL MOBILE, BUT I DO HAVE A QUESTION…HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU GET ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY CUT CIRCLES? THEY MATCH UP PERFECTLY IN YOUR PICTURES. NO MATTER HOW SLOW AND CAREFUL I TRY TO CUT THE CIRCLES OUT, THEY DO NOT FIT TOGETHER PERFECTLY. I’M GUESSING THIS IS ONE OF THOSE ‘PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT’ TYPE OF THINGS. 🙂 THANK YOU.
Oh mine are for sure not perfect! I have some wonderful scissors that really help. They are the Gingher craft scissors. They are made to cut through leather and are pretty small. For some reason they cut circles wonderfully.
Another reader had a fabulous tip, she said that once the iron on adhesive is on the fabric and the paper is still intact, you can actually use circle hole punches! Worth a shot 🙂
Hope that helps.
I borrowed a friend’s cricut to cut my fabric circles.
Great idea!
My 8 mo old LOVES windchimes and I wanted to get something like that to hang in her room, but I wasn’t wild about the noises. I must make one of these!!! Thank you so much for posting the steps!
I made one for the little girl I have due in January! Here is the link http://ninnyscraftycraziness.blogspot.com/2011/09/baby-mobile.html
Hi! I saw your mobile on pinterest and fell in love! But I am also in love with the bumper in the pic, can you tell me where it is from. I know this post is from last year but I was hoping maybe to find it out there someone 🙂 Thanks!
The mobile is beautiful! Can you tell me what size circles and what size embroidery hoop you used?
Thanks!
Hi! I use a 7″ or 8″ embroidery hoop 🙂
Thank you so much for this beautiful tutorial! I loved seeing everyone’s different take on it and I absolutely love how mine turned out, despite my being a terrible diy’er and having to make a few changes or lose my mind.
http://www.ashleedawnphotography.com/blog/2012/01/the-nursery-reveal/
That is so amazing! Thanks for the inspiration!
Mine is almost finished! How long did your ribbon end up being, and how far did you hang it above the crib?
wonderful! I cut my ribbons at 25 and 28 inches and I added more beads to mine so that it would hang down lower. You could adjust it to fit your room 🙂
Thanks for the great tutorial! I posted a picture of mine here: http://playtimeandpleats.blogspot.com/2012/01/fabric-circle-mobile.html
I was wondering if you had made a quilt to go with this mobile, and if so if you had posted a photo of it. I would love to see it as I love the colors and would like to make one similar. Thanks.
I did make one using the same fabrics! You can see it here in my etsy shop

Love your mobile! And I am going to make it. What size hoop did you use?
And what size wooden beads? They look big in the picture but in the tutorial, next to your fingers, they look small.
My daughter-in-law posted your mobile as something she likes on Pinterest as she is expecting our first grandchild, so I am going to surprise her with this!
Thank you,
Jill
The hoop is 7-8″ and the beads I use are 12mm. Thanks!
How big is the letter “R” from Joanns? It is so cute!!
It is around 24″ inches tall I believe, pretty big.
Ive just finished making this mobile in shades of white and grey/silver for my nursery! Looks beautiful in the room! Love it! Thanks heaps.
Sounds gorgeous! You are so welcome 🙂
I made one for my son. Used ribbon to cover the hoop and plastic beads instead of wood. Made some other changes as well. It was so much fun. Thanks for the great idea!
Hopefully you can see it using the link above. Facebook privacy settings and all…
Darn I can’t see it! 😦 I imagine it is darling! You can always upload to the flickr group! OR you can email it to me. Thanks for sharing!
I posted it to flickr.
Lyndean
I would love to see your mobile. unfortunately, i cannot view it 😦
Very cute! I made one of these with paper circles but glued the circles along string. I wish I would have used ribbon instead! It looks a LOT better!
Would you be willing to make two mobiles for my twins? I just do not have the time to make them. I can send you pics of their nursery. Thanks Casey
Check your email. Thanks!
Making one now in yellows, grays, aquas and black. Also, I just had a wreath so I am using that instead of the embroidery hoop. Once it’s finished I will show it off.
I have a question, I have looked for a measurement on the length of each ribbon, did I miss it? How long are your ribbons?
I ❤ this so much that I made 2! And just blogged about it here: http://www.danyabanya.com/2012/10/getting-ready-for-baby-hanging-crib-cot-mobile.html.html
I made a jungle themed mobile for my grandson. I used pictures of animals, and for ribbon I used green binding in a zigzag to make vines. I found some ruffles binding in the same material and trimmed out the hoop in it.
Here is how it turned out:
How far apart are your circles from each other on the ribbon? I’m am making one for a friend- it’s such a cute and unique mobile- thanks for posting!
I think around 1 1/2″ apart.
Thanks!
Thanks for the auspicious writeup. It actually
used to be a leisure account it. Glance advanced to far brought agreeable from you!
However, how could we be in contact?
This mobile was love at first sight for me! I had to make one for my 1-year-old’s room. I love how it turned out! Thanks for a great tutorial. You can see my efforts here: http://www.jrmaddy.blogspot.com/2013/06/dots.html
